Our project is pursuing LEED v4 BD+C for Core and Shell and is pursuing the Pilot Credit: Integrative Analysis of Building Materials. We originally were pursuing Heat Island Mitigation with Cool Walls, but fell just short of the requirements, so this was a later pilot substitution, meaning its pursuit did not directly influence material selection; however this project's LEED pursuit did influence material selection, so this substitution did not pose a major barrier.
We found that manufacturers that pursued detailed EPD Embodied Carbon/LCA Optimization reports/plans often had pursued other certification/environmental documentation for their products, as well. If a product was meeting BPDO EPD option 2 criteria, it was likely that it was a multi-attribute product. In the future when selecting building products, seeking items with the embodied carbon optimization reports and/or action plan separate from the LCA or EPD that meets the EPD option 2 criteria will be a strategy our teams employ to ensure the projects are maximizing the use of sustainable products.
Overall, I found this pilot credit navigable and applicable for our project and would pursue this as a credit if it was made permanent as a part of a future version of a LEED rating system.
