Pilot-Credits MRpc103:Integrative Analysis of Building Materials

Integrative Analysis of Building Materials

We have pursued this credit a few times now. It can be a heavy lift at first but once you get the documentation ready and forms completed it is easier on subsequent projects. We have many project using similar products that qualify for this credit.

You're right — the first time pursuing this credit can indeed be a heavy lift, especially when it comes to compiling comprehensive documentation (EPDs, HPDs, installation/maintenance guides, safety analysis, etc.) and tailoring narratives for each product category. However, once the baseline documentation is in place and project teams are aligned, the process becomes significantly more efficient. In our case, we’ve been able to streamline documentation for flooring, carpet tiles, and acoustic panels by creating standardized templates that integrate:
  • Environmental impacts by life cycle stage
  • Potential human health impacts using HPDs/SDSs
  • Safety assessments based on use, installation, and end-of-life handling
Rather than starting from scratch, we've implemented a replicable methodology that enables consistency and technical alignment across projects. This approach ensures quality, reduces redundancies, and supports documentation traceability — which has been key to efficiently demonstrating compliance across multiple certifications.

Hi John, Our team has completed this Pilot credit successfully many times. I agree, in the first times it required more effort, fortunately, more design and construction teams are open to implement products with EPDs and HPD for the good of the project in a holistic approach.

We’ve found that the integrative analysis process becomes far more manageable if a team builds or uses a centralized materials database rather than starting from scratch on every project. Are there any databases out there yet?
