Innovative and impactful new HVAC equipment?

HI MEP Leaders,

Related to our thread about equipment needed for decarbonization, I have a question about what new or improved equipment is already available now that you're excited about.

Every year we at BuildingGreen publish (and present at Greenbuild) a listing of the Top-10 new and exciting products. Our focus this year is on carbon reduction, so we'd love to include an HVAC innovation that's helping reduce carbon emissions. Anything come along recently that you're excited about?

thanks! Nadav

“Reducing carbon emissions” plows a pretty wide furrow. How’s this: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/global-first-leed-pilot-credit-130000488.html ? So, here's what we're going with as an HVAC product for the BuildingGreen Top Ten: the York yz magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller. Uses R-1233zd. We think it's kind of a big deal to have this new HFO refrigerant, but are there any practical downsides we should be aware of?

Nadav, It is a big deal to have the new refrigerant. We have clients looking for unitary equipment with these HFO’s or natural refrigerants and they just don’t exist in the US yet. Compressor manufacturers are slow to incorporate. Some companies in Europe and Asia are starting to produce them. The downsides to HFO’s can be efficiency, flammability and toxicity depending on which HFO is used. In this case, R-1233zd is more efficient than R-134a, its not flammable and it has low toxicity so there is no real downside. I can’t speak to refrigerant availability or chiller reliability.
