Including Mezzanines in the Energy Model

We are clear that for the total Gross Floor Area we have to include mezzanines. The project mezzanines are open to the floor below and are not used as occupiable space so; do they have to be included in the SF for the energy model? If we include them, we have to do a completely different model type. Has anyone excluded these spaces before or do they always have to be included?

If the space is conditioned it is supposed to count in the square footage.

So if the mezzanine is separately conditioned then it should probably count. If it is conditioned using the equipment from the space below then it would probably not be included.

A similar question: We have two conditioned attic wings with catwalks. The floor area only includes the catwalks, but the entire space is conditioned. For energy model purposes the entire space needs to be included; for the rest of LEED calculations, I'd think that only floor area should be included. It's a difference of 11,000 square feet. Do you agree with my reasoning? How should I account for this discrepancy in online documentation?

I believe the numbers for the energy model do not necessarily need to match other numbers in LEED. However you should inlclude an explaination if this is the case.

The credit documentation allows you to input both conditioned, and unconditioned space. Your energy model area should reflect the conditioned space. Unconditioned + conditioned should equal close to total building SF input elsewhere.
