NC-2009 IDc1:Innovation in Design

ID Credit History...

We are just seeing the first few v2009 projects certified, with many more coming of course, but with the 7 NC projects certified so far (out of almost 80 total for the firm), there are some interesting trends related to ID credits. Of the 21 points awarded on these 7 projects, here is the distribution: 12 are for exemplary performance 3 are for Green Cleaning Programs 2 are for Public Education Programs 2 are for Reduced Mercury Lamps (an EBOM credit) 2 are Pilot Credits (Process Water Reduction and Water Metering and Reporting) None of the projects got over 4 points, and most had 3. Too low a sample to show any trends, but interesting non-the-less.

Per Innovation in Design credit requirements, the proposed credit must have environmental benefits (impact). Could you please explain how Public Education Programs would qualify in this category. Do you know any specifics about these (2) projects.

Sorry for the delay, I have been in meetings and traveling. The Public Education ID credit has been with us for a long as there has been a standard (at least as long as I remember). There are well established criteria that GBCI wants to see, but our firm (we are engineers that work for many architects) does not do that documentation. But as an engineer, we get the opportunity to work on many projects for many teams, so aggregating the data across all projects is quite interesting. I will let others fill in details on how to gain this credit, but a well-designed education program will expand the performance of the building well beyond the users, something that NSF calls “broader impacts”. People can learn from sustainable projects and take that to their company or home and the market transformation continues. The two projects in question were a Landfill Power Generation Project and a Global Communications Center. But since you are interested, of the nearly 80 projects (many are v2.2 or before, or other products), Public Education has been awarded in 17 of them. The most common ID credits in our sample are Exemplary Regional Materials (26), Green Cleaning (23), Exemplary Water Efficiency (21), Exemplary Open Space (17), Public Education (17), Exemplary Waste Management (15), and Exemplary Green Power (11).
