Ice machines

John, For all intents and purposes, LEED does consider ice machines as subsystems using process water. So I see no reason a permanently installed meter on ice machines shouldn't count toward the subsystems metering required to achieve this credit. I'm not 100% sure on how a connection to a freezer would impact this, though. I think it's acceptable so long as the meter is clearly measuring only process water use. To address your last question, the ice machine subsystem must indeed be measured separate of any indoor plumbing fixtures, hot or cold, as well as any domestic hot water uses. The ice machine water use may be metered and combined with other process water subsystems (humidification systems, dish and clothes washers) to amount to at least 80% of the expected process water end use total. This paired with sub-metering water use for at least 80% of indoor plumbing fixtures and/or 80% of domestic hot water system capacity would then qualify the project for this credit.
