Position Summary
The Director of Energy, Sustainability, and Infrastructure is responsible for planning and management for the areas of energy management, sustainability, and critical facilities and infrastructure on a 59 building, 178-acre campus with 8.3 million building gross square feet focused on education, research, and clinical services delivery at Washington University School of Medicine. The Director will plan, manage and be responsible for a $19.3m utility budget, focusing on energy reduction and sourcing energy, concentrating on cost and carbon reduction, as well as the management of compliance, re-commissioning of campus critical facilities. The Director will be responsible for the Utilities Infrastructure, planning, management and strategic vision as well as campus sustainability program planning and management. The Director will serve as the organization's subject matter expert for sustainability, partner with internal and external leaders to establish programs that reduce overall consumption and improve the physical environment for our faculty, staff and students.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
· Directs/oversees a staff of five or more engineers and support staff responsible for all facets of planning the critical facilities commissioning, energy management program, campus sustainability program, and infrastructure planning and management for the School of Medicine.
· Leads the energy management program, focusing on reducing consumption, carbon footprint, and expenses. Manages the budgeting and procurement program, ensuring that we effectively procure and budget for energy and utility expenses annually, report on significant variances, and maintains a procurement strategy that matches the organization's risk profile.
· Directs/oversees the energy conservation program, including the energy database tracking of EUIs, building systems energy degradation, building retro-commissioning, and building energy totaling $1 million in annual savings. The yearly utility budget is $19.3 million.
· Serving as the organization's subject matter expert for sustainability, establishes programs and systems to measure, monitor, manage and minimize the organization's environmental impact contributing to more sustainable operations. In addition, serves as responsible for staying current with design and sustainability trends and representing the school in operational and construction/design sustainability.
· As a critical leader in the Operations and Facilities Management Department's leadership team, partner with OFMD, WUSM departments, the Office of Sustainability, and our medical center partners.
· Develops and implements regular sustainability reports promoting the successes and progress toward our strategic sustainability goals. The focus of this reporting will be on measurable and reportable impacts within the school and the community and global benefits generated from the program; this will be an integral component of our overall campus reporting program.
· Provides support, oversight, and policy direction for the utility infrastructure planning of the medical school campus. Acts as key contact and subject matter expert for the local utility providers related to the medical center's local utility infrastructure.
· Oversees and manages the planning and execution of commissioning, retro-commissioning, preventative maintenance, and capital renewal of specialized facilities, including BSL3 labs, vivarium, and on-campus ambulatory spaces genome sequencing.
· Assists the Director of Capital Projects with design review of all renovations and new construction and provides support, oversight, and policy direction of MEPF design standards development, upkeep, and MEPF document management.
· Assists the Director of Facilities Engineering in the planning of the overall Renewal Program of the physical plant.
Preferred Qualifications
· Undergraduate degree in mechanical or electrical engineering and a Master's in Business Administration, and 20 years of experience in higher education facilities management.
· Proven track record of long-range planning is essential facilities and utilities, energy management and sustainability.
· Experience in developing and utilizing performance indicators for process assessments and improvement.
· Ability to identify and analyze ineffective complex processes and develop recommendations to create streamlined logical processes.
· An influential team leader, team-oriented, with outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills.
Required Qualifications
· Undergraduate degree in urban planning, sustainability, mechanical or electrical engineering with ten years of experience in higher education facilities management.
· Must have experiences in infrastructure and utilities planning, sustainability program development and critical facilities (ABSL3, BSL3, Clean Rooms, etc.)

$99,800.00 - $175,900.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
