Does Hollow Metal Doors and Frames need to be included in the Low Emitting Materials, Option 1. Product Category Calculations? Would it fall under the Ceilings, Walls, Thermal, and Acoustical Insulation Category?

Loretta,
Based on my read of the reference guide, it should be included in the Ceilings, Walls, Thermal and Acoustical Insulation category. Table 5 in the reference guide (p. 351) indicates that doors are to be included in the Wall category, and although it appears that this table is included to inform the calculations for Option 2, I generally use it to help me determine which materials need to be included in the various categories. Hollow metal doors however, should for the most part count as inherently non-emitting. None of my v4 projects have been submitted as yet, so I hope that someone else can chime in with additional guidance.

We asked this same question to GBCI and they confirmed that doors and frames are considered a "wall" assembly if installed on the interior of the weatherproofing system; therefore, exterior doors are exempt and interior doors must be included. Table 5 as noted above can be used to determine Option 1 and Option 2, even though the reference guide explicitly calls out this table for Option 2. While this may not be a major issue for metal doors, it will impact your wood door specifications.

Hi Chloe,
Hi All,
Just want to be sure about Table 5. There are different opinions if it is only for option 2 or 1 also.
Did GBCI confirm that? Where can I find an official info on that?
Thank you in advance for your answer.

Hi Izabela: I recommend you reach out to GBCI in the "contact us" form. You can get project-specific guidance to upload to your LEED-Online credits. I contacted GBCI and received the following direction via email, "Note that although Table 5 was created for Option 2, the guidance in the table can be applied to Option 1 to help with product classification." Hope this helps.
