NC-2009 MRc4: Recycled Content
Hai all,
May I ask some clarification regarding the final document submission regarding recycled content:
1. At what point in time we need to submit the documents to USGBC.
2. What is the acceptable format - only the excel sheet available on the USGBC website or can we submit our own sheet with more details.
3. What kind of support documentation is required - do I need to submit all the manufacturer datasheets/letters and all original invoices/prices regarding the items in Div 03-10.

The recycled content percentage on the product data sheet is given as a range. What should I do?
Is the default average recycled content value of 25% for steel still allowed?
Can site materials, such as soil, be included in the MR credit calculations?
Are there recycled content claims that I should be wary of?

While I do not have the answer to this. Thanks for posting. Did you ever find out the answer? I recently was requested to create a screen shot of a map showing the actual distance on a map from my Mill / Extraction Point to the Job site.
I think this is pretty ridiculous ! If someone wanted to contest my mileage they could check it themselves. I have 30- mills and 30 maps to submit this is truly unreasonable. Someone show me where this is a requirement.

1. You submit the information when you submit this credit for review, which would be during the Construction phase review.
2. While you might be able to submit a different format, I would strongly suggest using their approved format.
3. Take a look at the actual online template - does it call out a requirement for a % of back up information? Earlier versions of v2009 required uploading backup supporting 20% (by cost) of your materials. Later versions of v2009 did not require any backup to be uploaded. If the template doesn't state any upload requirement, you can always double check by contacting leedcoach@usgbc.com. Make sure to provide the name/# of your project, when it was registered, the credit name/#, the version of the credit template form (at the bottom of the online form) and your request for clarification on the % of required upload.
As for what to upload (if required), no invoices are required for recycle/regional materials. Any backup you do have submit, highlight/circle/box the required bits of info. If they have to scrounge through 35 pages of product data for a recycle %, it is more likely for them to read something that may question your backup. Keep it simple, but complete.
A few general hints:
Do NOT round up your numbers. If something is 98.7%, type in 98.7, do NOT round up to 99%.
Anything claiming to be 100% regional is suspect. Very few things would hit that threshold. If you are claiming that, make sure your backup is air tight.
Make sure the recycle claims in the product data is product specific. If the manufacturer gives you a range ("Our products have from 15% to 25% recycled content") you must use the lower % unless it clarifies the actual % for your product.
Similarly, if a product is manufactured out of different manufacturing plants and there are different recycle % at each of the manufacturing locations, you need documentation to show that your product for your project came from a particular manufacturing location.
If you are required to upload backup documentation, look for the products that cost the most, make sure your backup is air tight, and submit those - this will reduce the amount of backup you need to submit for review.
