Payette is the first AIA Firm Award recipient to have been nominated jointly by the Committee on Design and Committee on the Environment. Z Smith championed their nomination, positioning Payette as leaders in design, performance, and equity. As Z described in his nomination, “Our profession faces two great challenges: (1) To attract, cultivate, and advance a pool of talent as diverse as our nation, and (2) To transform design such that buildings, instead of being the single largest contributors to climate change, become part of the solution.”
