fair trade for building products?

Hi all,

We have been noodling on how to preference socially just building products and are feeling a little overwhelmed by the number of questions that we would need to ask our suppliers. Essentially we find ourselves wishing that there was a fair trade label for building products very similar to the one for global agriculture. Or, maybe a certification that uses HPDs + EDPs as a template would work? Anyone else out there asking these same questions? Any answers or ideas about how to move this initiative forward?

Hi Sarah: What a great question. I wish I knew more on this, but this is what I can offer. The Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard addresses this Here is a link to V4 the text on this topic starts on page 74 https://s3.amazonaws.com/c2c-website/resources/certification/standard/v4_2nd_draft_docs_FOR_PUBLIC_COMMENT_FINAL_071420.pdf. The level of certification for a product is limited to the lowest level of performance in each catagory, not an average. So, a Gold rated product may perform higher in this catagory, but not lower. Complaince for products in California are governed by The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act https://oag.ca.gov/SB657. Hi David, I really appreciate you taking the time to share what you know on this topic. I noticed that our local CSI chapter had a townhall about DEI this week (unfortunately not until after it had already happened). We are  also working on getting more connected with OAME and NAMC - Oregon so hopefully that will help connect the local dots. I would be surprised if a global cerification doesn't emerge soon.
