Hello all,
we're working on a mixed-use building under LEED NC v4, which has in its last floor a residential space with exclusive access to an open roof terrace.
When looking into ASHRAE 90.1-2010 exterior lighting mandatories, we are thinking on classifying this roof terrace as a an special feature area, but there is some confusion as if this space falls under the scope of the standard since section 9.1.1 exception b establishes that lighting within dwelling units is exempt from the section requirements. So my questions would be:
- Does the open roof terrace fall under the scope of section 9.4 and must comply with the exterior lighting allowances, even if it is part of the residence beneath it?
- If so, would the special features area be the appropriate surface classification?
Thank you,

I think it applies as exterior lighting. Only lighting within a dwelling unit is considered a process load. Special feature area seems reasonable to me.
