Has anyone submitted a project that includes ADA spaces in the spaces served by EVSE? For example, if a total of 3 charging stations are required on a project, and one of those is placed at an ADA parking space, how would that be reviewed since the ADA parking spaces are restricted to only those vehicles with ADA tags?

GBCI allows handicapped parking to be provided with an EVSE parking spot - I recently did this on one of my v4 projects. It was quite large and there were 20+ handicapped spots so it made sense to locate 1 charging station there.
The credit language states ""...reserve these spaces for the sole use by plug-in electric vehicles". There is a chance that a vehicle with handicapped plates/tag may be an electric vehicle so it makes sense to consider this location for a charging station.
parking for EVSE cannot be located in preferred parking for carpool or low-emitting vehicles....as charging stations must be located separately from such spots.
Hope this helps!

David, didn't v4.1 eliminate the need for reserving the preferred spots for carpool/LEVs?

Hi Emily,
Yes, LEED v4.1 does eliminate the need for reserved green vehicles spaces and carpools. However, it does require that the EV spaces are dedicated to EV vehicles.

As EVs become more popular, it makes sense that some (if only at least one like David mentions above) are handicap accessible. Some information here https://www.access-board.gov/tad/ev/

Thanks for that link, Deborah! We are seeing more jurisdictions requiring that at least one EV space or some percentage be ADA accessible, but they rarely have design standards for ensuring the charger itself is accessible.

Deborah, the link is quite useful. While I am still not sure how the GBCI is going to look at this issue in terms of meeting their thresholds (perhaps the "use last" signage is the way to go?), I am going to be encouraging all of our teams to make use of this guide regardless of certification aspirations. Thank you!
