NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Evidence of efficiency

1) We received data sheets from a set of construction documents that specify minimum efficiencies of chillers to be purchased. The efficiencies are the minimum efficiency requirements from ASHRAE efficiency tables. Is this sufficient evidence for compliance with EAP2? 2) How does USGBC confirm installation of this equipment? Do photographs with nameplates need to be sent? The project is in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

1. Yes it is. 2. No installation confirmation required including photos.

Just to clarify...this shows that your chillers are compliant to the ASHRAE standard 90.1...it does not mean automatic success for achieving EAp2 which entails compliance in many other aspects as well.

Thanks for the response. Efficiency requirements seem to be a gray area in Sao Paulo, Brazil. ARI certifications are difficult to attain due to the need to export equipment to the US for the certification. Does USGBC trust the equipment manufacturers in Brazil (or any foreign country) when they say that their equipment complies with ASHRAE efficiencies? How do they know?

The short answer is yes they trust the manufacturer. When demonstrating compliance with the efficiency requirements, absent a test according to the appropriate standard, it is often necessary to provide a thorough explanation for how the equipment complies. The manufacturer would hopefully be able to help you explain it. They don't know for sure so provide a really good explanation with data from the manufacturer.
