NC-v4 EAp2: Minimum energy performance
Hi,
As per ASHRAE 90.1 - 2010, section 10.4.1, it is unclear for us if motors for fire surpression used in fans (manufactured after December 19, 2010) need to comply with the minimum efficiencies tables (10.8A - C). If so, which one?

Technically probably yes unless you can find an applicable exception. For LEED however these fans are generally not included in the model as they do not operate under normal conditions. So this is not something evaluated for LEED compliance.

Although these motors are not evaluated for LEED compliance, the technical reason to exempt emergency motors (fans) would be very low usage factor (less than 50h/year).
At the most, I would apply the requirements only to very high power motors (higher than 150 kW), similar to fire pump motors.
Do you agree with this approach?

Yes I agree that is the reason for excluding these motor, they just are not used much if at all. If a motor is designed to operate under normal circumstances, even for say regular testing purposes, then it should technically be included. If it only operates in emergency circumstances then it would not need to be included no matter the size. So I don't think size is the issue, it is usage. How many hours/year before it should be included? That is probably a judgement call on the part of the modeler.
