Educating clients about carbon and electrification

Hi everyone - we have a new higher ed client who is committed to sustainability but not very knowledgeable about current topics such as carbon (both embodied and operational) or the electrification of buildings.  I need to educate them and would like to start with some easily-digestible background reading.  But as we all know, we're a bit dorky, and I've gone down the rabbit hole of pulling together way too much information that may overwhelm them and make them run.  This is a student center/dining hall renovation with a possible small addition in the heart of the country.  I imagine I'm not the only one of us who's facing the challenge of educating clients on rapidly evolving topics so wondered if anyone has recommendations for material that will be simple for them to read and understand the issues.  Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

These two BuildingGreen spotlight reports published recently come to mind: · Changing building design for a changing electrical grid · The urgency of embodied carbon and what you can do about it. Ramana Koti Associate, BEMP, LEED AP BD+C D +1 404 253 1478 LORD AECK SARGENT A KATERRA COMPANY F

Dee - Obviously, there are loads of great resources that approach sustainability, high level and extensively "in the weeds". You might consider pointing them towards AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) - https://www.aashe.org/. They have resources for all positions within an institution of higher education and may provide greater encouragement given the organization is focus.

One thing to do is suggest that your client reach out to other higher educational universities who are sustainable champions/leaders. It's always great for peers to talk to each other in addition to hearing from their design/construction service providers. I would suggest reaching out to the University of Iowa. They have incredible sustainable goals, run their own power plants, which they have taken major steps to reducing their carbon emissions, and have recently renovated their dining halls/ built new dining halls. They are one of 13 universities throughout the country that has put a lot of effort into educating students on nutrition and meet the WELL requirements (i.e. w/ nutrition information, digital signage, apps, ingredient labeling, plate sizes, etc.). It's pretty cool. As you know, dining hall directors want to talk to other dining hall directors, which are completely independent from the building & design services who are responsible for the design and construction, vs. the energy management team, vs. the power generation team. Email me at theresa.lehman@miron-construction.com if you want the names and contact information.
