Ashrae 9.4.1 Lighting control states that "Buildings larger than 5000 square feet must have an automatic control device to shut off all lighting in the building. Is this only the tenant space total area which is going to get certification or the total building area which have multiple tenants including the tenants who going to get certification. If we are going to certify three floors which is 4000 sq.ft each and come under one tenant, is it 3*4000 = 12000 which is higher than 5000 sq.ft, therefore required all the lighting should be automatic controlled or 4000 sq.ft which is lesser than the 5000 sq.ft, therefore does not required any automatic control. Please clarify whether the 5000 sq,ft is the total area going to certified or the floor or space area? Thanks in advance.

Ramesh,
I believe that in this case it refers to building area as a whole, regardless of tenant space allocations. If the building is over 5000 square feet, then you need an automatic shut off device for unoccupied hours.
