NC-v4 EAc3:Advanced energy metering

District Cooling Plant - Chilled Water Metering

Hi Everyone,

For a project connected with DCP, is it sufficient to meter the chilled water coming into the project using a single BTU meter for the 'Space Cooling' end use? What if the District Cooling Plant is also owned by the same developer, would the chillers, condensers/cooling towers and pumps in the plant need to be metered? If so, how can those be divided between the multiple projects the plant is serving?

Also, the project is also targeting the Water Metering credit. Will the chilled water be considered 'Process Water' and need to be metered? Or since no water is being consumed (only recirculating between heat exchangers and terminal unit cooling coils) it does not have to be metered?

Assuming that you are just certifying the one building and not all of them connected to the central plant, you can meter the chilled water were it enters the LEED building.  The chilled water would not be process water and should not be one of the end uses metered since it does not actually use any water.

All buildings connected to the central plant will be targeting LEED certification. In this case, would it be sufficient to ignore electricity consumption of the central plant and only meter the chilled water where it enters each building?

Clarification: Each building will target individual certification.

Yes you could exclude the electricity used in the central plant with that approach.
