Has anyone had luck getting credit for a take back service program like Steelcase's (https://www.steelcase.com/services/#recycle-reuse_overview) or ANEW (http://anewfound.org/sponsors/full-circle-knoll-anew/)? It seems to meet the intention of the take-back program, and is actually probably more comprehensive, so I am curious if anyone else has used these programs to document compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility? Thanks in advance.

I have successfully used the ANEW program for Knoll and the ceiling tile take back program for Armstrong on a project.

Hi Allen, what documentation for the ANEW program did you submit to take credit for this?

Looks like Herman Miller may have a qualifying program, too: https://www.hermanmiller.com/our-values/environmental-advocacy/repurpose...

There are a number of legit EPR/product take back programs in flooring that would comply with the credit intent, it's just a matter of submitting the correct document from the manufacturer. We have a recycling program at Interface, Tarkett has one, Shaw has one for carpet, Armstrong Flooring has one for VCT and similar (Armstrong Ceilings also has one, but its a totally separate company now), but I would question how legit any of the other manufacturer programs is. Any carpet manufacturer who refers you to CARE for product take back probably doesn't have a real program. CARE's parent company, the Carpet & Rug Institute, lobbies against EPR legislation all over the country and ended their subsidy program for local carpet recyclers this year, driving many of them out of business in the middle of the pandemic.

What about paint manufacturers? I feel like I remember seeing something from Benjamin Moore, but can't pinpoint where that might have been, other than the handful of states that participate in the Paintcare program. Their Declare labels state that it has a take back program, but no other details.

There are definitely some EPR/Stewardship programs at for paint. They started getting regulated State-by-State and now have take back in many states. This article has a nice summary https://www.coatingsworld.com/issues/2019-11-01/view_technical-papers/ep...

All,
Has anyone had success with submitting the Paint-care Extended Producer Responsibility/Stewardship program operating in California? For SRM? In Commercial Interiors projects, paints can be a big number that would contribute to the SRM value.
Thanks for any insight on this.

Make sure you check out the new USGBC guidance on what a legitimate EPR program is. It's much more specific than it used to be. https://www.usgbc.org/resources/bpdo-credit-checklists-and-submittal-tips
