NC-v4 EQp1:Minimum indoor air quality performance

Compliant air-cleaning devices for ozone

We are working on a project where the ozone levels exceed the most recent three year average, so we must include air-cleaning devices for ozone. Are MERV 13 Filters compliant air-cleaning devices for ozone? Thank you

Hi Lorenzi, No. MERV 13 filters are good for small particles. Ozone, a gas, is not filtrated by MERV 13 filters. Carbon filters can adsorb ozone and catalyzing it to oxygen. If you have access to ASHRAE HVAC Applications Handbook, the chapter on Control of Gaseous Indoor Air Contaminants has a good explanation on it.

Thank you Dionisio, we have a project in Milan but we haven't done calculation about the ozone concentration, we only suppose to exceed the 0,107ppm limit. We didn't understand how to calucate the most recent three-year average, annual fourth-highest daily maximum eight-hour average ozone concentration. Best regards Giorgia

Hello Giorgia, greetings! You may access www.aqicn.org to check the ozone, particulate matter, and other air quality metrics closest to your location. Ozone concentration is not calculated, it is monitored by several Air Quality Agencies worldwide such as this one. If you are located in a non-ozone polluted city, ozone cleaning device may not be required. Otherwise, you should use air filter with activated carbon in all your outdoor units. From the LEED form v4 for EQp Minimum IAQ Performance, the statement they provided has been confusing to many people. It indicates "Project is located in non-attainment area for ozone", whereas if you put check on it means that you are located in ozone polluted city. Same scenario happened to my project when we received the Preliminary Review comments. Hope this clarifies and helps all with same case.
