I have a police station project with a complex occupancy (multiple shifts, public meeting rooms, etc). I have the raw data (ie. peak occupants, transients, FTE) entered, but an upload (Upload PIf3-1) is required to provide FTE calcs, patterns, shifts etc. I have never done this and wondering what format this should be. I got the occupancy info from the owner, didn't do any "calculations", so I don't know if I need to do "calculations", make a graph, or just write a narrative description for the required upload? If anyone has any examples, that would be helpful.

Calculating FTE for multiple shifts is not as complicated as you think, butdo an excel spreadsheet can make it a lot easier. If all the shifts are 8 hours, then the calculation is simple: three 8hr shifts per day with 10 people per shift equates to 30 FTE. Now, if the shifts are more than 8 hours, or people work for than 5 days per week, the calculation gets a little more complicated. I use this formula to calcute the FTE for each type of employee: (# of people in shift group X hours worked per day X days worked per week) / 40. You divide by 40 as that is the typical work hour week used by LEED.
So, 4 persons working 9 hr shifts 6 days per week equates to 5.4 FTE for that shift group. Use the formula for each working group and add them up for the total FTE. 9 hour shifts also mean shift overlap. So, your peak FTE would be 8 FTE, when the two 4 person shifts overlap. Does this make sense?
You should also include a narrative describing the shift patterns and upload the spreadsheet with your calculation.
