Waste commingled on site CAN count as multiple streams. If the waste provider can provide material-specific diversion rates for the waste from the project, the streams can be counted individually. If the waste provider only provides an overall diversion rate (for the total commingled waste), the waste is only considered one stream.

What is the right documentation for the material-specific diversion rates? Where in the country is this achievable?

Hello Alicia, it is best to work with a waste recycling company who can accept co-mingled waste and that perform the separation and reporting of recyclable materials for each dumpster hauled. Typically they will provide a monthly report showing the number of yards of the various recyclable categories which were recycled for the month. At the end of the project a report will be provided which shows the recyclable amounts diverted. You need to get the waste recycling company involved early to help with input towards the site recycling plan before construction begins. All trades need to be trained on the plan. The other option is to create separate dumpsters for various recyclable materials (i.e. concrete, wood, drywall, steel, paper and non-recyclable waste) Then maintain records for each type of dumpster moved to recycling facilities. Hello Alicia, the waste sorter/recycler will provide documentation with each load of waste how many yards of the various recyclable streams they sorted for each load of waste. Cumulative totals of the recyclable streams are tracked and a total diversion is given at the end. Preferably a dumpster ticket is issued with each load picked up and the ticket is marked at the recycling facility with the cubic yards of the various recyclable materials. This ticket is turned in and provided with the monthly reconciliation report. This is available in Houston Texas.
