EBOM-2009 MRc6:Solid Waste Management—Waste Stream Audit

Combined Waste Stream Audits

Hello! I am working with two properties that are pursuing LEED certification separately. However, the buildings are located right next to each other, have the same tenant, and use the same vendors. The waste vendor combines the trash from the shared dumpsters, and we are using a square footage calculation to determine the amount of weight from each building for MRc7. Could the same calculation be used for a combined waste stream audit, or will they need to be collected and analyzed separately? I am not sure the vendor has the resources to separate, but do not want to get dinged for the combined audit. Thank you very much in advance for your feedback!

Elizabeth, sorry but you will need to do a waste audit for each building. Here's what we do. Ask janitorial to separate one days trash/recycle from each building. Then do the audit on each waste stream immediately. The reason for the waste audit is really to work out if the tenants in each building have 'got the idea' of separation and recycling. Too many times we find that one building has a great team who really understand what, why and when of recycling....and the very next building are full of 'people who just throw EVERYTHING in the trash bin'.
