NC-v4.1 EQc2:Low-Emitting Materials

Clarification on LEED Low-Emitting Materials Applicability for Concrete Curing Compounds

We would appreciate clarification regarding the applicability of LEED v4/v4.1 Low-Emitting Materials requirements for concrete curing compounds used as part of cast-in-place concrete works.

Since curing compounds are applied directly onto poured concrete during construction and become part of the concrete work rather than an exposed interior finish material, our understanding is that such products may be considered outside the scope of Low-Emitting Materials evaluation, particularly where they are not exposed to occupied indoor air during building operation.

What is your take on the curing compounds used within poured concrete and other material like this?

Faran,  Curing compounds are listed in the SCAQMD Rule 1113.  We have consistently sought to specify and utilize compliant products and have reported them in our low emitting credit.  Please note that both immediate and long term exposure to VOCs and TVOCs are addressed by the credit requirements.  Compliance with Emissions testing seeks to ensure products are not affecting the indoor air quality as the product off-gasses or "cures" long term.  The v4 Reference Guide indicates that "...on-site wet -applied products must not contain excessive levels of VOC's, for the health of the installers and other tradesworkers who are exposed to these products."  Hope this helps.

Denise, I appreciate your input. It clarifies part of my query. However, what about the additives that are used within the Cast-in-place concrete? Can they off gase later on? If yes, do we need to document them? My original query is about the embedded products/materials, that becomes the part of concrete itslef. Before the application of Insulation (water/air barriers). As per the LEED Reference Guide clarification, things out of water/weather barriers are considered outside/outdoor. Please, your thoughts on it.

Faran,  Hello.I believe you are inquiring about concrete admixtures.  The v4 Ref. Guide provides info under the MR Overview confirming that Concrete admixtures are each "separate products" for purposes of the MR credits, however, for purpose of documenting Low Emitting compliance, my understanding is that cast in place concrete may be considered as inherently non-emitting regardless of the "ingredients" used in the mix design.  There is no need to list "concrete", admixtures, pozzolanic material, or any component material of the concrete mix design in the Low Emitting calculator.
