Clarification on ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Scope for External Equipment

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking clarification regarding ASHRAE 90.1-2010 compliance in the context of LEED. Specifically, does the standard consider mechanically ventilated fans, equipment, or PHE pumps (used in STP or WTP) that are located outside the building as part of the process loads?

Any guidance or reference to relevant sections of the standard would be greatly appreciated.

They are all process loads. You can't point to anywhere in the standard that says they are process loads. A process load is often something that is not regulated by the standard. You can tell them by their absence from the standard, not their presence anywhere in it.

Hi Marcus, thought so about it. Thanks for the confirmation. I am also confused whether to include the PHE equipment operation and mechanical ventilated axial fan operations outside the building premises in the final energy consumption figure. I have developed a spreadsheet based calculation but I am skeptical to add them to the final figure.

All energy use within and associated with the project must be included. LEED requires that you account for all energy use within the project's LEED boundary in the energy models.

Hi Marcus, even though if it is not connected to building main power distribution board?

Yes. If it is located within the LEED project boundary.

Got it Marcus, thanks a ton!
