NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

CHP-generated electricity

Dear all, we are working on a project which be supplied from a DES with CHP. The source of CHP is not renewable energy but natural gas. We've done the energy modeling and calculated the CHP Electric Output according to the Option 2 in the DES Guidance for LEED 2009. Our question is, can the CHP-generated electricity be substracted from the total electricity consumption of the building? If yes, how can we record it in Leed-Online-Form. As far as we know, only if the output-electricity is generated from renewable sourece, it can be substracted or compensated as a part of total electricity consumption. We would greatly appreciate if anyone can explain this question. best regards,

Hi Yue Nie, You can record your savings as Exceptional Calculation Method following "Methodology for Modeling Combined Heat & Power for EAp2/EAc1 in LEED 2009" that can be found on: http://www.usgbc.org/resources/methodology-modeling-combined-heat-amp-power-eap2c1-leed-2009 And by following that you should upload your "hourly based" calculations to LEED Online showing the following: A. The amount of (kWh) generated - And cost saved. B. The amount of heat recovered - And cost saved. C. The amount of gas input to your CHP units - And cost of expenses. Usually the $/therm rate at point C. is cheaper than the normal boiler rate used at point B. I have filed the three points above as separate ECM calculations before, just to make it easier for the reviewer to understand my calculations. I hope this helps. Regards,

Does the building that you are modeling consume the electric energy that is produced by the CHP system directly?

Hi Khaled, thank you very much for the advice. As I see, the document "Methodology for Modeling Combined Heat & Power for EAp2/EAc1 in LEED 2009" can only applies to on-site systems, whose CHP inside project site boundaries. In our project, the CHP is in the DES-Center and outside the project site boundary. Actually we've performed an energy modeling according to the document "Treatment of District or Campus Thermal Energy in LEED". But I would like to try to record the CHP-generated electricity in the EXCEPTIONAL CALCULATION MEASURE SUMMARY by Leed-Online. Thank you very much! Best regards,

Hi Francesco, yes, the CHP-generated electricity is consumed by more buildings, and our project building is one of them in the whole campus. thanks and best regards,

Hello, have you considered the document "Treatment of Scandinavian District Energy Systems in LEED"? https://www.sgbc.se/docman/leed-2014/438-treatment-of-scandinavian-district-energy-systems-in-leed-v1-1-2014/file It deals with CHP as well. Regards

The Scandinavian DES can only be used by European projects so not sure if it applies or not.

Thanks very much Francesco, Marcus, yes our project is in Europe, we haven't used the "Treatment of Scandinavian DistrictEnergy Systems in LEED", but followed the document "Treatment of District or Campus Thermal Energy in LEED".
