NC-v4 LTc6:Bicycle facilities

Child care center - students included in occupany?

We are building a child care center for toddlers age 0-5, therefore we did not register under New Schools as the project does not include grades K-12. The form asks for number of occupants in order to calculate the number of bicycle storage spots, however, I think it's safe to assume the toddlers will not be riding their bicycles to school. Do we need to include the students in this number or just the FTE?

Great question, childcare centers do have special circumstances when it comes to occupancy.  The Getting Started of the LEED v4 BD+C Reference Guide section does not address Preschool aged students. But similar to primary and secondary school students, the project can treat the preschool students as regular building occupants. However for bicycle facilities and other credits (think Indoor Water Use Reduction) a special circumstances narrative can be provided to describe the occupancy and usage based on the ages of the occupants. Describe the assumptions and modify the calculations accordingly. You will still need to provide short and long-term spaces in accordance with the credit requirements for peak visitors and regular building occupants of safe-bicycling age.
