NC-v4 MRc1:Building life-cycle impact reduction

Changing structural systems between the baseline and proposed design

Hello

Is changing from concrete structure to steel structure accepted in LCA?

We started our baseline with a concrete frames then shifted to steel structures in the proposed design. is this shift accepted toward building LCA optimization?

Hello Ahmed. Yes this is an accepted strategy for LCA optimization. Make sure the building GSF didn't change more than 5% in the baseline vs. proposed case to meet the criteria for comparability. Very interesting study! Please share what your team learned!

Hi Ahmed,  Yes, agree with Sarah.
As stated in LEED guide, “No impact category assessed as part of the life-cycle assessment may increase by more than 5% compared with the baseline building.” (Page 496).
And you may should include a narrative of how the life cycle assessment was conducted and the changes made to proposed buildings in order to optimize the LCA.  Best regard – Afogreen Build Team
