Greetings friends.
Many of you have heard about the CARE Tool, (formerly the 2Build or not 2Build Carbon Calculator.) We are now in the final stages of bringing it online as a free, open access tool hosted by Architecture 2030. We are finalizing and aligning data and working with a web developer (the same one that brought us Architecture 2030’s Zero Tool), to develop an easy to use, robust, user interface. The CARE Team is issuing a survey to help us validate some of the information within the tool before our public launch this fall.
We have crafted the message below to be shared with the survey link:
The CARE Tool, an online tool for calculating and comparing the embodied, operating and avoided carbon impacts and benefits of reusing and upgrading existing buildings or replacing them with new construction, is in its final stages of development! Our hope is that the CARE Tool will be immediately and broadly useful across a wide range of building types, project approaches, and user backgrounds to evaluate the avoided carbon impacts of building reuse compared to new construction. To this end, we are capping our pre-launch stakeholder engagement with a ~10-minute survey for you to help us ensure that the options within the tool reflect your experience of reusing buildings and where more or different options are needed.
Users of the CARE Tool define their building reuse approach by selecting dropdown menu items organized by structural, enclosure, MEP, and interiors scope. These dropdown menu items are then used to approximate a total embodied carbon footprint. The scope options described in the dropdown menus reflect stakeholder engagement and expert consultation. They are intended to be flexible enough to allow users to represent and evaluate high-level approaches to building reuse without a detailed design or deep technical knowledge. Additionally, the dropdown options are tailored to support the comparison of building reuse compared to new construction.
We are asking for your help to make sure the CARE Tool works for you as an advocate, designer, planner, policy advisor, and more! We greatly appreciate your feedback on how well the tool reflects real-world approaches to building reuse and where we need to address gaps. To keep development on schedule, Please respond by Monday, August 1st. Please reach out to Larry Strain at lstrain@siegelstrain.com or Lori Ferriss at lori.ferriss@goodyclancy.com if you have any questions about the survey or the CARE Tool!
