Pilot-Credits SSpc158:Onsite Carbon Sequestration Through Plantings

Carbon Sequestration outside the US

Hi,

It seems that the tool for this Pilot Credit can only be used on projects within the US.  Is there any way of meeting these requirements on non-US projects - a similar tool for measuring onsite sequestration or a way to use this tool for non-US sites?

Thanks!

Hi Oliver,
Even though there is an alternative tools such as Pathfinder tool (https://www.landscapeperformance.org/benefits-toolkit/pathfinder-landscape-carbon-calculator) that can be used for non-US project, I don't think there is a way to meet this pilot credit for non-US project because the prerequisite requires I-Tree Planting Calculator Project Report, which is only for users located within the US.

Hi!  Many thanks for the pointer - very interesting to see this.  It would nice if this pilot credit was opened up for non-US projects if there are similar tools available, but I agree it seems unlikely that this would work at the moment. Thanks anyway!

Hi all, I believe that you are able to replace the i-Tree calculator tool report with a comparable tool according to the LEED guidance. With that said, I am not aware of any other tools that are suited for projects outside of the U.S. Option 2 for the credit allows alternative strategies to be submitted as long as they include the following:
  • Intent and goals of the proposed strategy and how it aligns with the pilot credit intent
  • How the strategy addresses carbon sequestration potential of the baseline site vs the proposed site
  • What metric(s) or alternative tools are used to measure success as well as any supplemental scorecards
  • Demonstrate a minimum 10% increase in carbon sequestered by all trees and shrubs (and any additional vegetation that can be measured) on the proposed site, compared with the baseline site.

Hello everyone, We are currently using the Climate Positive Design calculator, but we have not yet received confirmation on whether it is an approved option by the GBCI for projects outside the US. Our experience so far indicates that the total square meters of landscaping entered are not accurately reflected in the final report. The report shows a smaller landscaping area—approximately one-third of the total—and we have been unable to determine the cause of this discrepancy. To address this issue, we have used the carbon sequestration indicator per square meter (according with the report) to estimate the total impact of the landscaping. We hope this approach will be effective for managing this credit for projects outside the US. Best regards!!!
