So far I have seen the COTE measures and toolkit shaping our design process and the way we begin design kickoff meetings with clients. The biggest strength is that it’s a framework that any project/design can fit into, no matter where in the process they are. Other frameworks we’re familiar with (LEED scorecards or other certification programs) can sometimes feel more limiting and prescriptive, whereas this is super open to however you want to define it, and checks the “meets people where they’re at” box without making assumptions or jumping straight into sustainability goals/metrics. We’ve gotten really good feedback when opening this up with the last few clients we’ve discussed this with. It doesn’t hurt that last year’s COTE chair was Marsha Maytum (principal here at LMS), so we are especially primed to adopt this as a design tool, but I still feel like it’s in a “beta” period for us. Curious if others are using this with clients and/or if people have found a ‘shorthand’ way to communicate the measures without feeling like you’re trudging through a list… even if you’re briskly walking through the concepts, I’m wondering if it’s easier for clients to digest if they’re more “clusters” of categories – like, energy/water/resources, then community/change/wellness… etc. We may try that out next time, but curious if others have worked out another way of communicating the concepts meaningfully and concisely. We’re considering broadening our sustainability ‘tracking’ to align with these measures as well – aspects that the “superspreadsheet” can help with as well. Unfortunately my schedule doesn’t work for this call’s time slot, but I’m interested in these questions/topics

Just a quick note – I apologize I couldn’t make today’s call. Generally the 2nd Thursday works for me but we haven an all-office meeting on the 1st Thursday that was delayed this month due to the holidays. James Roseberry. My apologies as I also missed today’s call due to a last minute schedule change resulting in overlapping meetings. Janet Olson, AIA, LEED AP Principal G|R|E|C Architects On
