Building Electrification/Decarbonization Working Group

In our quest to create a low carbon future the lectrification/Decarbonization working group is planning spend the next 10 months creating tools to advocate for electrification:

  • How to create a grid that works for our electric future.
  • How to electrify buildings, both existing and new.
  • How to advocate for policies and legislation that encourages electrification.

If you would like to join our group to contribute or simply keep up with what’s happening, please reach out.  If you have resources to share or connections to others doing this work, please let us know.

Hi Mark, Washington State has an electrification group as a very active set of committees under ShiftZero, of which AIA Washington is a leading member. Our scope is electrification in Washington in the building sector: space heating, water heating, cooking, etc. We have groups on Equity, State Policy, Technical Matters, Codes, Local Policy (like jurisdictional gas bans), and Outreach. We have been working with state legislators, RMI as well as many other orgs on how to implement electrification. I chair the Technical group and am on the State Policy and Code group. Interestingly code appears to be the biggest driver of electrification (I also am on the State Building Code Council and chair the Energy Code TAG). We are in a state with relatively clean electricity so it’s easy to make the case that electrification reduces carbon emissions…we do work in other states where the case is not as clear and requires projections. Having Inslee as a governor and a Democratic majority also helps with the mandates for clean energy, and having forward-looking companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Paccar, others) make it easier, though there are still many headwinds. The clean air/health aspect of electrification appears to be one of the most visceral, acute aspects, especially during COVID where everyone has heightened concerns about air quality. There are a wealth of resources – happy to help you find what you are looking for. -Kjell From:

I am definitely interested in the topic & would like to join the conversation. I am most interested in phasing & scale, such as what is sound technology available NOW in WHAT SCALE. Is cold climate heat pump a real thing? Can the DC power grid ceiling be the basis of design? Do we even bother to consider co-gen even if your utility company offers great incentive? Is a heat pump water heater applicable in large multi-family project? etc. etc.. There are advantages of all the techs out there, but it all depends on timing & scale, and I'd love to sort things out in large bukets to generate some kind of playbook. I just need to know more about what is out there and how reliable they are..  Love to participate & learn more!

I'd like to keep up with this group as well. Particularly related to existing buildings and in locations with dirty grids that have timelines for becoming clean(er).  Thanks! -Julia

I’m happy to share the information we developed for the electrification ordinances around the bay area. I’ve shared most of that with the folks up in Seattle also doing amazing work. I can share out some of the road blocks we had in SF on the Mayor’s Taskforce for decarb/electrification. I'm in as well. Wanted to share the summary of MEP equipment electrification resources we've compiled thus far as part of the SMEP group.  Ideas for next steps on equipment electrification front:
  • Determine manufacturers & recommended contacts for additional information and advocacy. The SMEP Electrification Outreach Google sheet can as a central repository for information.
  • Share created SMEP Electrification Equipment Input Google form with interested manufacturers and equipment reps, so they can fill in information on current equipment - this form feeds information directly into the Google sheet mentioned above.
  • Establish metrics for tracking of improvement over baseline condition. Eventually we'll have enough information that maybe BuildingGreen can create a public database of equipment that supports electrification initiatives in buildings?
  • Develop update(s) to the original letter and schedule for updates.
  • Update database and track additions of equipment and improvement over time.
  • Track electrification grid support by region over time?

Mark, if possible I would like to connect you to Dr Katrina Kelly-Pitou (katrina.kellypitou@smithgroup.com).  She is an Energy Analyst at SmithGroup that works at a policy & strategy level with campuses and urban scale developments to help them with electrification & decarbonization.  She was also previously a researcher for the World Energy Council in London for a few years doing similar work.  Let me know the best way to connect you to her!  Cheers!

Hi folks--it's awesome to see so much interest in this topic! Given the volume, rather than replying to the list, we'll assume that everyone wants to be kept informed and will ensure that there are check-ins about progress on this that are announced here an open to everyone. We're also working on increasing the coordination across the networks, so we can pull in the great that the MEP group has already been doing (see Sarah Gudeman's note about their work on this same thread). And we'll set up a way for others to plug in. In the meantime, if you have something substantive to say about this topic, by all means, speak up. If you just want to sign up to stay in the loop, stay tuned or email one or the organizers directly (you can find everyone's email in the Member Directory). thanks! Nadav
