Brightside product scoring tool pilot

Hi Everyone - I'm posting this on behalf of Jeff Frost whom many of you know from his days as an SD Leader with SmithGroup and SERA and in his new role as head of Brightworks Sustainability's materials group.  I am excited to be working with Jeff on this concept of multi-attribute product scoring.  Cheers, Lona

Dear SDL’ers,

We’ve recognized the difficulty project teams have making better product choices when faced with the myriad of certifications and standards. So for the last three years, we’ve been refining a methodology for scoring products across a spectrum of sustainability attributes; health, carbon, materiality, water/waste, social/ecological. These scores allow project team members to identify best-in-class products and manufacturers without the need to understand all the underlying details.

To make this tool effective, and not just another broken spreadsheet, it needs to leverage product data and contribute to a common data ecosystem. For this, we’re launching the Product Scoring Pilot with GIGA’s Origin Database (the same data used by mindful MATERIALS), to build the scoring logic into an online, cloud-based platform. Every member of your project team will soon have the capacity to make better product choices.

We’re getting ready to kick-off the development phase, where we are bringing together subject matter experts, knowledge partners and sponsors to help us refine the criteria and determine the functionality of the user interface. The process should take about 4-5 months and we’d love to include you and your company in that effort.

We already have an amazing group of supporters, like: McGill University,  Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Parsons New School, ZGF, Smithgroup, Opsis, Ankrom Moisan Architects, Holst, Mahlum, Mithun, Shaw/Patcraft, Superior Essex, and others.

We’d love to show you what we’ve been working. Please let me know if you have time for an introduction and discussion. You can email me at jeff.frost@brightworks.net.

Thanks you so much.

Hi all. Following up on Lona's post, I recently spoke with Jeff about the Brightside product scoring pilot and thought the system has the potential to streamline the material selection and evaluation process. Having a wide range of evaluation criteria in one common location (and having the ability to make straightforward comparisons between materials in the same class) seems like a great way to inform decisions about products. We're considering it for projects as we're growing our in-house knowledge of materials. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts about the tool. Thank you!

Hi Everyone, Adding another positive opinion here for the potential I see in what Jeff and Brightworks are developing. Jeff spent some time taking me through it, and in my mind it really shows great potential to make informed, better options much easier and quicker for teams to identify in the otherwise still quite fragmented world of materials vetting – and that simply means more good choices can and will be made. I am optimistically looking forward to this being rolled out. Christy F
