NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Baseline HVAC system with 2 predominant spaces

Dear All,

We have a projects designed for commercial purpose with 3 main spaces types:
- Restaurant: ~34,000 s.ft., 10 stories
- Offices: ~40,000 s.ft., 9 stories
- Retail: ~12,000 s.ft., 2 stories

The whole building consist of more than 5 floors and does not provide heating in the proposed design, therefore it is determined that System 8 shall be adopted as the baseline HVAC system. According to the building peak cooling load (>300 ton), 2 water cooled chillers with equal size shall be provided in baseline model.

However, we found that the peak thermal load of those 3 spaces differ by more than 31.2 W/m2 from each of them, i.e. Restaurant: ~350 W/m2, Retail: ~215 W/m2, and Office: ~175 W/m2.

In such a case, I should set Office spaces as System 8 (due to its area), then set Restaurant and Retail as System 4?

If so, I should determine the water side again by the peak thermal load of Office spaces ? i.e. If the load of Office spaces is below 300 ton, only 1 water-cooled chiller shall be provided?

Grateful if someone could confirm by interpretation. Thanks a lot!

Your general approach sounds right. Basically you are required to apply the exceptions to G3.1.1. If any of those exceptions apply then you subtract the area and reenter Table G3.1.1A. Sounds like an odd building with 10 stories of restaurant.
