NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Baseline 4 Orientations or Not

Hi All, I am working on a LEED NC 2009 Project. I just wonder if I need to use the average results for 4 orientations for baseline model. Is it acceptable to only run 0 degree baseline model? Where can I find the requirements on such issues? Many thanks in advance!

You don't rotate it if it is an existing building or if you can demonstrate that a different orientation would be impossible.

There is a reference to this in the Advanced Energy Modeling Guide for LEED. Existing building clearly do not need to be rotated. Existing/addition combinations do not get rotated if the addition is less than 50% of the existing. It gets a little fuzzy if the addition is greater than 50%. If you look at ASHRAE 90.1-2010 there are two exceptions listed which include situations where there is little difference between the glazing areas of each side of the building and where physical constraints of the site make rotation impractical. I think you could cite those as rational reasons not to rotate.
