Can an ATM count as a "Bank"?

I would say not. There is almost no equivalence in terms of services offered, and I don't think most people or businesses would count the presence of an ATM as a key community service that makes it more walkable.

I see your point; however, I can't remember the last time I was in a bank. Used lots of ATMs though for withdrawal and deposit (you can even get snail mail stamps). Just a thought. Thanks.

It's a fair point. Part of the rationale behind my answer is simply the generally conservative approach that USGBC takes to approving services that aren't on the preapproved list. I don't think anyone would mistake a bank for an ATM. If you go through our NC version of this forum (go to single page view at he bottom and then search for ATM) you'll find a similarly nonconclusive discussion of this topic, by the way.

I was considering the same question on a project. I don't think the USGBC defines bank, but Merriam Webster defines it as "an establishment for the custody, loan, exchange, or issue of money, for the extension of credit, and for facilitating the transmission of funds." Since you can't get a loan from an ATM it is considerably less valuable than a true bank. I wouldn't count on it for SSc2 but if that's all you've got you might as well submit it and get feedback from your reviewers.

Good point, luckily I found a beauty salon last night within 1/2 mile of the project, so I shouldn't need the ATM (it was a stretch). Thanks!
