NC-2009 MRc3:Materials Reuse

Asphalt Milling - Will this qualify for MRc3 & MRc2?

As part of our project the existing asphalt parking lot will be milled and the material will be reused in the new asphalt lot. The asphalt plant happens to be just across the highway. Will the material be eligable for both MRc3 and MRc2? Thanks.

7/3/14 Update: I believe I mispoke here. See my the comment below.Yes, can you count this toward MRc2 and MRc3. Arguably the reused asphalt could be seen as recycled content in this context, so if you weren't hitting your threshold with MRc3 I think you could apply it to MRc4 instead—but I wouldn't try to do both.

Hi Tristan, I have always been thought that you could not double-count most credits in the MR section, with the exception of regional content. The reference guide says "Materials counted towards material reuse cannot be applied to MR credits for building reuse, construction waste management, recycled content, rapidly renewable materials or certified wood." This indicates that the project would not be able to submit for both MRc2 and MRc3. Were you indicating that the asphalt could count towards Construction Waste Management or towards Material Reuse, but not both?

Heather, I'm sorry that my wording was not clear. I would not double-count between MRc2 and MRc3. In some cases I could imagine having some leeway to apply a material to one or the other, but not both at the same time.

Thanks Tristan - that clarifies.
