ASHRAE Standard 240P - Evaluating Greenhouse Gas (GHG)and Carbon Emissions in Building Design, Construction and Operation

Hello All,

ASHRAE and ICC released a draft standard for operational and embodied GHG evaluation.  It's on a fast track to be completed in time for the next code cycle.  This 30 day advisory draft includes dozens of questions looking for feedback from experts like all of you.  Please take a look and provide comments.  I've uploaded the draft and there's a link in this press release excerpt.

Best,

Adam

ATLANTA (April 21, 2023) – ASHRAE and the International Code Councilannounced that an advisory public review is open for a proposed jointgreenhouse gas (GHG) evaluation standard. Proposed ASHRAE/ICC Standard 240P - Evaluating Greenhouse Gas (GHG)and Carbon Emissions in Building Design, Construction and Operation is open for comment from April 21, 2023 to May 21, 2023. Drafts are posted and comments can be made at osr.ashrae.org.

The purpose of Standard 240P is to provide a methodology to quantify anddocument GHG emissions associated with buildings, building systems, and equipment over their life cycle.

The standard will cover the following:

  • Existing buildings, new buildings, groups of buildings, or portions of buildings.
  • Determination, including calculation methodology, and expression of thebuilding(s) zero net GHG and zero net carbon dioxide emissions status for building operation.
  • GHG emissions associated with flows across the site boundary and off-site credited flows.
  • Embodied GHG emissions of building materials and systems.

Standard 240P will also offer procedures and minimum requirements for thequantification of embodied and operational GHG emissions including reporting and documenting.

Thanks, Adam! Looks like I need to update an article that’s publishing Monday. :-) As I see it, this is an important first step toward incorporating embodied (and operational) carbon into the IBC. They need an industry standard they can reference for whole-building carbon before it becomes part of the code. === Paula Melton, she/her, LEED AP BD+C Editorial Director BuildingGreen , Inc. 122 Birge St. #30 Brattleboro, VT 05301 Email: paula@buildinggreen.com LinkedIn | Twitter | Facebook BuildingGreen champions the changemakers in sustainable design and building with trusted insight, unparalleled education, and communities that are transforming the industry.
