ASHRAE 209 Energy Modeling Standard

I'm curious who in this group has used ASHRAE Standard 209-2018, Energy Simulation Aided Design for Buildings except Low Rise Residential Buildings?

We've used it internally (minimally) as a reference to help better communicate the goals and activities involved with energy modeling at various phases of design. But it seems like there's an opportunity for this to be more connected to our scope. I think it comes across as a bit daunting to some of our team or clients and I'd love to point to some examples of others that are using it. Also, if anyone is really interested in ASHRAE 209 and weighing in on future updates, AIA is looking for architects who want to be more involved in the development process. I'd be happy to connect with you.

Thanks for your input! Even a quick response of yes/no to your use of 209 would be interesting feedback for the ASHRAE 209 development committee.

There are folks on here that have done webinars on the subject and may have good feedback. The structure 209 provides is useful and I reference the standard from time to time but for many high-performance projects I've been working on, I find that the scope becomes a custom modeling methodology that zig zags through multiple modeling cycles. Especially when one starts with a goal like EUI of 20 or 20% improvement over an ASHRAE 90.1 Baseline. Occasionally there is the project that fits perfectly into just one or more of the cycles like simple box modeling or HVAC system selection modeling. Hi Julia, Yes, we've used it, although not at all extensively. Internally to understand what the broad term "energy modeling" can encompass, and with some MEP consultants it has felt as though we need some kind of common language/reference if we are asking them for something outside of LEED energy modeling or code compliance modeling. ASHRAE 209 seems like a good starting place for setting expectations.

We recently referenced 209 within an RFP for building performance simulation services for a couple of projects we are starting. Essentially we utilized the modeling cycles as the common denomenator to ensure that proposal scopes would be apples to apples. It is clear there are requirements, and even certain modeling cycles, are not necessary and/or applicable for many projects.

Yes! It would be great to have more architects spec'ing 209, and involved with updating it. Kjell and Kim Shinn (in the S MEP group) were involved in creating the current version, and did a fun webinar on it for this group early last year. Scroll down to Feb 2020 on the Webinars page to find the recording. Nadav

We have referenced 209 on several of our RFPs for MEP & sustainability consultant services. Similar to what others have said, we use it as a guide to establish common language & ensure proposals are apples to apples in terms of scope & expectations. I think the AIA Architect's Guide to Building Performance does a nice job of outlining the framework as well. I reference this graphic a ton, both internally & with our consultants.
