Architects Needed! Decarb Task Force

Hi everyone,

As you may know the ICC has changed the way the IECC will be written in the future and most of us think that will reduce the stringency of the future energy codes that are the biggest lever in the fight against climate change within the buildings sector.

So one of the best pathways forward is via ASHRAE, which has a commitment to reduce energy use and decarbonize. While you may think ASHRAE is a strange organization for you to be involved in, the AIA doesn’t actually write standards, even when they are important to architects practice….but ASHRAE does. One of the most important efforts is being put together now: the ASHRAE Decarbonization task force. https://www.pmengineer.com/articles/95235-ashrae-forms-task-force-for-building-decarbonization

We need Architects to speak for the big picture, for envelopes, for our clients, for programming, for existing buildings, for coordination among disciplines, and for what we know about building design and reuse. The Task Force has been formed already. However, the subcommittees that will craft most of the response are being put together now. It is not a given that architects will be on the subcommittees, but COTE and many of us SDLs believe that architects’ viewpoints are important to the creation, but this requires YOU. Please let me know if you are interested in learning more. You should be comfortable with technical discussions but do not have to be an expert, just able to speak to the architectural viewpoint.

The time commitment as I understand it is a couple of calls a month, perhaps a couple of hours each ... for much of this year.
