NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

air-cooled chiller condenser fans modeled separately?

Hello, Is it mandatory to break-out/model the condenser fans for an air-cooled chiller separately? I am using Trace700 and I'm working with a custom equipment data file I received from the equipment vendor. However, the data file only gives the total unit power consumption, it does not break-out or have separate data for the condenser fans. Therefore the energy model results do not show any energy consumed for "heat rejection" for this chiller. Is this acceptable for LEED NC v2009 or do I have to figure out a way to represent the condenser fan energy? That won't be easy because this chiller has an unusual control strategy for controlling the variable speed condenser fans. Thanks, Rob

For LEED you do not have to break out the heat rejection energy use. It is fine if the condenser fan energy use is within the cooling energy use. You should be able to identify this energy use within the Trace reports i think. The Library members report should indicate how that equipment has been modeled in Trace and whether the condenser fan is broken out from the cooling or not. Also check the Equipment Energy Consumption report to see the breakdown of the energy consumption related to the components of individual plants. What is important is that you identify that this energy use is being included in the model.

If you model a condensing unit in Trace and specify either the efficiency of the chiller includes the condensing unit energy consumption, it should separate the energy into heat rejection automatically. If it didn't, it is very likely you didn't model a heat rejection equipment.
