AEC SDL firm's sustainability certifications for their offices?

Hi everyone -

I'm writing to conduct an informal (and unscientific) poll about the green certifications achieved by office spaces (main or branch) for Green Gurus firms. SERA is preparing to embark on the journey of finding, designing and inhabiting new office space, and we're interested to hear and learn from your experiences, especially from those of you who have pursued an LBC Petal certification for a commercial interiors project (which is our most likely stretch goal). Once the responses are in, I'm happy to share what I learn with everyone.

What national green certifications have you attained for your office space(s)? e.g. LEED, LEED Zero _____, ILFI Zero _____, LBC Petal _____, LBC, Fitwell, WELL, RELi, Reset, Envision, and/or others?

Kicking the poll off:

  • SERA's Portland and Oakland offices arre both LEED CI Platinum certified, and our Oakland office is Reset certified.

Both of Miller Hull’s offices (Seattle and San Diego) have achieved Living Building Petal Certification. Seattle went Materials Petal and San Diego made net positive energy and achieved all Petals except the Water Petal. We are tenants in both spaces. The STO Building Group has 3 WELL Certified offices and 3 LEED offices. We've done an LBC petal project a few years ago for a client, but don't have one ourselves. I'm happy to share more about that experience if you'd find it helpful. Additionally, I'm happy to share with you some of our findings on perceptions of third-party certifications (p12) from clients and partners in our 2019 Survey on Sustainability, Wellness, and Resilience - https://indd.adobe.com/view/650505f7-4444-4c9b-b369-ae3bc8aa80ff

Hi Clark, While everyone is working from home, or living where they work, our Mithun Seattle office is currently undergoing renovation and we are going for a Living Building v4 Materials Petal. We won't have final certification until summer 2022.

While these are not national green building certifications, this might fit into an "other" category for local business certifications. Our San Francisco office has a Green Business certification from the SF Environment Green Business Program and our Los Angeles office is also recognized as a Green Business in the City of Los Angeles Green Business program at a Tier 2 Innovator Level.

In all three locations we have tenant leases. We looked at Fitwel, believe we were at 2-star level, in guiding a refresh of the San Francisco office space, though given the small number of years left on the lease it did not make sense at that time to certify.  Thanks,
Mike Fowler

Hi, Good Question: Stantec Boston in LEED-CI Platinum (2011) and Fitwel 2-stars (2017). This is typical of our larger/"flagship" offices: Toronto, Edmonton (HQ), and Denver. SOM's standard is:
  • LEED Gold for all office renovations
  • WELL Gold, with a stretch goal to WELL Platinum
    • Several of our US offices are currently working towards renewing their LEED/WELL certifications with recent renovations
  • Our Shanghai office has achieved RESET certification
  • We recently signed up for the World Green Building Councils Advancing Net Zero Goal which targets Net Zero by 2030 for your organizations entire operations
  • Each office may engage in local programs to advance sustainability with their local Mayors offices and these initiatives vary on a case by case basis.

All DLR Group offices have achieved Reset Certification as part of our Healthy Spaces initiative. I am happy to connect our Air Quality guru to the group to discuss more in regards to Air Quality efforts. Everyone has access to the air monitoring data for their office which has prompted a lot of observations around the group from impacts of construction in the building (not even on our floor); how to mitigate issues; impacts of forest fires and more. It has been a tool for all our offices to work on improving IAQ and when there has been a spike beyond our control we used it as a tool to send staff home. Other offices have received LEED or pursued other certifications such as WELL but this initiative has been our most successful to gain awareness and adoption to achieve optimal IAQ. Love this topic and seeing what everyone has. I need to do a more full census of DPR as I suspect we have a few that are LEED certified to some level that aren't included below. Off the top of my head, DPR's offices in:
  • Austin - LEED, WELL, Net-Zero Energy
  • Nashville - WELL
  • Phoenix - LEED, Net Zero Energy
  • Redwood City, CA - LEED
  • Sacramento - LEED, WELL, Net Zero Energy
  • San Diego - LEED, Net Zero Energy
  • San Francisco - LEED, Net Zero Energy
  • Washington, DC (Reston, VA) - LEED, WELL, fitwel, targeting Net Zero Energy
We've built two petal-certified projects, though not for any of our own spaces (yet!).

Elkus Manfredi Architects office in Boston is LEED CI Silver. We moved into a space almost as it was over 6 years ago and made very few changes or updates, it was challenging to get the Silver, there was not a lot of reward for doing a minimal renovation and simple fit-out. We are just starting to informally investigate WELL and fitwel since we have made recent updates due to the pandemic. Jacobs has pursued LEED certification for many of our offices where appropriate – most are in the Gold level and some at Platinum. We have not yet pursued LBC or Petal certification, but our Boston Office recently achieved LEED Gold, WELL Gold and Fitwel 3 star. For a few of our offices that are not doing extensive renovation (such as Philly), we pursued Fitwel since it it focuses less on design and more on process and operations. Thank to everyone who has responded so far, and thanks for all of the additional information and offers to share lessons learned!
It is really interesting to see what folks have been doing, and what's changing going forward.

I have compiled the information in a Google sheet at this link:

Very interesting overview and I added our firms certifications to your list. Out of curiosity, do any of these certifications focus exclusively on carbon neutral design, construction, and operations? Seems like there is room for a certification that focuses on that metric only. FXCollaborative’s current pursuit of LEED CI Platinum is now on the list. I’m also interested to hear what frameworks folks use to seek carbon neutral office operations (energy use, travel, waste, etc.). This is a really interesting list being compiled. Entegrity's main headquarters office is LEED Platium, LEED Zero Energy and ILFI Zero Energy. We are currently constructing a new mixed-use office building and will be pursuing ILFI Zero Energy for the whole building, Fitwel Residential + LEED CI on the commercial spaces.  I'll add this to the google sheet you started.    Meredith Hendricks

Hi Clark! Weber Thompson's previous space was LEED v2.2 CI Platinum. Our new space is pursuing LBC v3.0 Petal Certification (Materials) *note: this is along with other tenants and core & shell building, not a commercial TI certification per se. The project is completed, we're just wrapping up documentation and submitting to ILFI. The new space is also pursuing Fitwel 3-star - documentation in progress.
