As announced in last week's SDL/SCL Winter Summit, I have been working with a group of regional AEC professionals, industry stakeholders, and the New Buildings Institute on two code proposals to the 2021 Seattle Building Code that limit the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of concrete & steel in buildings over 50,000 sf (see attached). We recently submitted the proposals to Seattle's Construction Codes Advisory Board (CCAB) which is planning to review them in a public meeting on 3/2/2023 from 12-2 pm Pacific.
Per the City, a few letters against the proposals have already been submitted by concrete and steel industry associations that prefer to let innovation happen on a voluntary basis. To help balance the discussion, we have prepared a letter of support and are looking for a broad range of AEC industry stakeholders to sign on (especially those with work in Seattle). https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhqlDEz0VF_SMVRqmv7Gx_lwUyVcg-vakTPKBCDU7vBUu27w/viewform?usp=sf_link
Names will be collected thru 5 pm Pacific on 2/14/2023 and the letter submitted to the Construction Codes Advisory Board the following day. If you are interested in attending the hearing, check the CCAB webpage link above. They typically post call in info and agendas about a week prior. If you are local, in person will also be an option. If you prefer to submit your own letter, you can email it to jenifer.gilliland@seattle.gov Make sure to submit at least a week prior to the hearing so it can be distributed to the CCAB.
Hoping to see lots of you sign on to encourage Seattle to approve the proposals and inspire other jurisdictions to do the same. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
