NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

Acceptability of >300 Setpoint Not Met Hours in High Equipment Load Rooms (e.g., UPS Battery Rooms) – Airport Project

Hello everyone,

In one of our airport projects, we have several mechanical/electrical rooms with high equipment loads, such as UPS and battery rooms. Due to the nature of these spaces, our energy model shows setpoint not met hours exceeding 300 annually in these zones.

Given that these rooms are typically unoccupied and serve critical infrastructure with unique thermal characteristics, we would like to ask:

  • Does LEED allow exceptions or provide flexibility for exceeding the 300 unmet load hour threshold in such specialized spaces?
  • Are there precedents or guidance for handling high unmet hours in non-occupiable, high-load technical rooms under LEED v4 or v4.1?

Any insights, references to ASHRAE 90.1 interpretations, or experiences from similar projects would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

See G3.1.2.2.1, you could provide justification, but I would ask why those spaces are not meeting the unmet load hours. It is usually an indication of undersized equipment or an unrealistic set point. Easiest thing is to fix it in the model so you don't have to try and provide justification.
