A novel concept popped up when LEED v4 came around: demand response, or DR. This is the ability of a building to respond to the grid’s need to work harder during peak times by temporarily curtailing building-level energy use. It’s valuable because, when deployed at scale, it prevents utilities from having to fire up older, dirtier fossil-fuel plants in order to meet demand.
