Intent

For Core and Shell and Warehouse and Distribution Center projects, refer to additional applicability criteria in Guidance Document

For the world to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050, all new buildings must meet the following three goals. This alternative compliance path provides a simple intuitive path for new buildings to document achievement of these goals:

  • GOAL 1: Buildings must be built capable of running without onsite combustion except at very low outdoor temperatures
  • GOAL 2: Buildings must have low peak heating and cooling loads
  • GOAL 3: Buildings must reduce other energy loads and invest in renewable power
  • Applicability
    This pilot Alternative Compliance Path applies to v4, v4 2024 Update, and v4.1 (Including Major Renovation)

    • BD+C: New Construction (18 points)
    • BD+C: Core & Shell (18 points)*
    • BD+C: Schools (16 points)
    • BD+C: Retail (18 points)
    • BD+C: Warehouses & Distribution Centers when heated (18 points)*
    • BD+C: Hospitality (18 points)
    • BD+C: Healthcare (20 points)
    • v4 and v4 2024 Update BD+C: Multifamily Midrise (24 points)
    • v4.1 Residential BD+C: Multifamily (18 points)
    • v4.1 Residential BD+C: Multifamily Core and Shell (18 points)*

    Requirements

    Note: This ACP uses a prescriptive approach without requiring detailed energy modeling. For an energy simulation performance path intended to accomplish the same goals, reference Pilot ACP EApc 161: Electrification – Energy Simulation Performance Path.

    A summary of the requirements and criteria is provided below. The Guidance Document available under the Resources tab for this ACP provides detailed guidance for the ACP, including thresholds, standards, point allocations per rating system and climate zone, and documentation requirements.
    EA Prerequisite: Minimum Energy Performance:
    1. Comply with ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1–2016, with errata or a USGBC-approved equivalent standard.
    2. Analyze efficiency measures during the early stages of the design process and account for the results in design decision making.
    EA Credit: Optimize Energy Performance:
    (or v4 BD+C: Multifamily Midrise Annual Energy Use)
    Combine any of the following strategies for a maximum of the points referenced for the project’s rating system (Applicability section):

    PART A: REDUCE EMISSIONS FROM ONSITE COMBUSTION
    (4 to 7 points available dependent on climate zone; additional variations for Schools, Healthcare, and v4 Multifamily Midrise rating systems)
    • Space Heating: Design and build the project’s space heating to be capable of operating without onsite combustion emissions when outside temperatures are above 20 °F (-6.5 °C), and with minimum system efficiency of 2 COP. (1 to 4 points dependent on climate zone).
    • Domestic Hot Water (DHW): Design and build the project’s DHW systems to be capable of operating without onsite combustion above 20°F (-6.5 °C), and with minimum system efficiency of 2 UEF or minimum solar fraction of 0.4. (1 to 2 points dependent on rating system).
    • Cooking and other process loads: Design and build the project’s cooking and process loads to operate without onsite combustion, and with minimum system efficiency of 2 COP for process furnaces and hydronic heating. (1 point dependent on rating system and loads)
    • Emissions-free operation from on-site combustion: Design and operate the project with no onsite combustion. (1 point)
    PART B: REDUCE HEATING AND COOLING PEAKS
    (6 points available)
    • Infiltration and balanced ventilation: Demonstrate through an air leakage test a measured air leakage of the building envelope less than or equal to the specified thresholds, AND design supply and exhaust airflows to be within 10% of each other. (1 point)
    • Ventilation heat recovery: Each fan system supplying outdoor air must have an energy or heat recovery system with a minimum 70% enthalpy recovery ratio or a minimum of 75% heat recovery ratio (with exceptions as applicable in Guidance Document). (1 point)
    • Peak thermal loads reductions: Comply with balanced ventilation and heat recovery criteria above AND design the project with the sum of peak design heating and peak design cooling loads to be less than the specified thresholds. (1-4 points)
    PART C: REDUCE ENERGY USE
    (5 to 8 points available dependent on climate zone; additional variations for Schools, Healthcare, and v4 Multifamily Midrise)

    Projects must use the prescriptive path from ASHRAE 90.1-2016 or USGBC approved equivalent standard to document achievement of points in this section.
    • Lighting: Demonstrate a minimum 30% improvement in the sum of installed interior lighting power and exterior lighting power. (1 point)
    • HVAC, DHW, and refrigeration efficiency (1 to 4 points)
      • Path 1 – Prescriptive improvements in efficiency meeting the specified thresholds
        1. Heating, cooling, DHW, and regulated refrigeration
        2. and / or
        3. Fan power
      • OR
      • Path 2 – Total System Performance Ratio (TSPR) meeting the specified thresholds
    • Domestic hot water use: Reduce domestic and process hot water use by at least 20%. (applicable to BD+C: Healthcare - 1 point; or BD+C v4: Multifamily Midrise - 3 points with additional efficiency criteria)
    • Unregulated and conveyance loads (2 points)
      • Path 1 – Prescriptive
        1. Install at least 90% by rated power of eligible equipment, appliances, and commercial food service equipment meeting the specified standards.
        2. and / or
        3. Computer room efficiency. 20% reduction in the Overall Systems Design Value and server virtualization implemented in accordance with industry best practices.
      • OR
      • Path 2 – Performance. Demonstrate the specified minimum percent improvement in total unregulated loads plus regulated conveyance equipment.
    • On-site renewable energy: Install solar PV panels on-site meeting one of the referenced thresholds. (1 point)
