Implement a quality control program to ensure that construction waste from facility alterations or additions is not mishandled. Perform periodic checks, and generate reports during the performance period to ensure that the target waste-diversion rate is being met and that the correct information is being collected for all waste leaving the site.

Some haulers allow commingling of different types of construction waste together onsite and then take it off-site to be separated. There are pros and cons to sorting waste on- or off-site.

Off-site sorting

Construction waste must be isolated from the ongoing consumable waste stream in order to get an accurate measurement of the waste generated from construction activities. Even if the two waste streams will ultimately be recycled or landfilled via the same dumpster, construction waste still should be separated and measured prior to being mixed with other waste types.  

Track all applicable material waste generated during the performance period (diverted and not diverted from landfills and incinerators), and transfer this data to the LEED form prior to submitting your LEED application. 

Post signs in any languages spoken on the jobsite to reiterate how to separate construction waste and which bins should contain which types of material.

Achieving this credit also depends on the experience and willingness of contractors and haulers to participate in waste management practices. It is crucial to educate contractors and subcontractors about waste separation and tracking and to enable constant communication with facility personnel in order to achieve these credit goals. 

Hold a contractor and subcontractor orientation meeting at the outset of construction so that everyone knows how to sort and track construction waste. Review your basic expectations for the project and the jobsite.
