How many people are involved in procurement in your project building? If it’s only a small number of people, you’re likely to have an easier time establishing tracking systems and managing the transition to green products. If procurement is decentralized, it may take more time to coordinate with everyone who makes purchases.

A bus line that goes in separate directions (for example, one into town, one out of town), counts as a single bus line, not two, and does not meet the credit requirement for two bus lines. Compliant bus lines must serve two distinct routes. The simplest way to determine this is to verify that the buses display two different route numbers. Two routes that converge near the project and then diverge blocks away count as separate.

If a rail station or bus stop that you plan to use for compliance has not yet been built, you will need to provide proof that it will be funded, sited and planned at the time of project completion. (It does not have to be built, however.)

If you are limited by budget, space or programming, your team may want to find other ways to meet the shower requirements.

Public, private, or campus bus lines in proximity to the project site can be used for credit compliance as long as building occupants have consistent access at peak times. If there is an existing shuttle that runs nearby to the project site with restricted access, consider talking to bus operators to see if you can get permission for your project occupants to use the shuttle. Residential projects generally provide a separate bike room to keep bicycles secure. Find creative ways to provide required storage for bikes without giving up too much floor area. Bike hooks, stackable racks and vertical storage may meet the needs of your project as long as each bike can be accessed by the resident at any time. 

Some projects have two or three “main” entrances from which to measure the distance to bus stops or rail stations. If any one of these entrances is within the required distance, this can qualify your project for the credit. Confirm in the credit narrative which entries are “main” entries.

Retailers in particular may want to locate the bike racks closest to the storefront or the building entrance closest to their store. 

You can also extrapolate purchasing data from other tenants to estimate purchase quantities for tenants who don’t provide data. However, all of those extrapolated purchases are assumed to be non-compliant for the purposes of LEED. That raises the percentage of purchases by participating tenants that must be compliant. Identify the best space, either inside or outside the building, in which to locate bike racks. For projects with zero lot line and no site area, the bike racks will have to be located outside on the sidewalk or inside the building. Most of the time, the site’s parking area or garage is a suitable location for bike racks. Bike racks outside the building must be within 200 yards of the building entrance, either on the project site or on a public sidewalk.
