Air sealing between units is recommended for several reasons, even if smoking is banned.  In multifamily buildings and hotels it is common for occupants to smoke inside their units despite nonsmoking policies. Without air sealing between units, other occupants may be exposed to secondhand smoke and odors. Air sealing between units also improves energy performance, particularly in high rises subject to the stack effect, in which warm, buoyant air rises upward, leading to thermal losses and ventilation problems.

Enforce the nonsmoking policy. Non-smoking policies can be implemented with communication, documentation, and building signage.

A nonsmoking policy during construction is not required for this prerequisite, but it is a good idea for the contractor to adopt and enforce such a policy, particularly after the enclosure is installed. This policy can help also achieve EQc3.1: Construction IAQ Management Plan

Fill out the LEED credit template once documents are complete, and upload all supporting documentation to LEED Online.

Ensure that designated outdoor smoking areas remain 25 feet or more from entrances, operable windows, and ventilation system intakes. Designate the location of these areas on design drawings.

Incorporate smoking policy signage into plans and construction specifications.

Eliminating smoking in a building costs virtually nothing and is the simplest way to control environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).  Possible associated costs include the cost of signage indicating that the building is nonsmoking and the development of a nonsmoking policy. Benefits include occupant health and productivity as well as reduced cleaning and maintenance with the absence of butts, ash, and tobacco smoke residue.

Determine smoking policies with the help of building owners, and identify exterior smoking areas if applicable. Incorporate the project’s requirements into the Owner’s Project Requirements developed for building commissioning (see EAp1).

Maintenance will be required for most stormwater systems. If the project uses structural controls, check with the product manufacturer, designer, and engineer for details on additional cost for maintenance requirements. If the project uses non-structural controls, have the designer confirm the associated maintenance practices for facility manager or additional contracts required. Maintenance costs will vary depending on the strategies employed.

If relying on natural infiltration in landscaped areas, keep the plants in those areas healthy and avoid soil compaction from vehicle use.
