CI-v4.1 WEp1:Indoor Water Use Reduction

Reuse of Non-Energy Star Ice Maker

I'm working on a LEED v4 Interiors project and have an existing undercounter ice maker that is not ENERGY STAR certified. We are reusing the unit because it's not in budget to replace it, and I’d like to understand how this might affect compliance with the Indoor Water Use Reduction prerequisite.

  • Can we document intent to replace the unit at end-of-life and still meet the prerequisite?
  • Has anyone successfully submitted a LEED Interpretation or CIR for a similar situation?
  • Would a performance equivalency narrative (e.g., water and energy specs) be acceptable if the unit meets water criteria but not energy?

Any insights or precedent cases would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Elleanna,You are not required to document an existing appliance that is intended for reuse, and it is not required to meet Energy STAR. If it is shown in your project documents, you should just indicate - either via a note in the drawings or a note on the prereq/credit form (in the Special Circumstances box if there is not a more appropriate location) - that it is an existing ice maker that is more than 1 year old and will be reused by the owner, thus purchase of a new appliance was not in the scope of the project. There is no need for an interpretation.A related post from a v4 project is here, for additional confidence: https://leeduser.buildinggreen.com/forum/existing-ice-machine
